MDA appoints Christina Williams as

Program Services Coordinator

Christina Williams is the latest addition to the MDA Team, this is what she has to say.

"Just 3 years ago, I had no idea who I wanted to be or what I wanted to do. I was so uninspired in the work I was doing that I decided it was time for a change. I applied for a one year traineeship at Belmore School; a specialist school for children with physical disabilities and health impairments. Little did I know, this would change my life.

I enjoyed it so much that all I wanted to do was work with these inspiring children. So I got a job in the Specialist Children's Services of Calvary Silver Circle, who provided me with training from Monash Medical Centre and the Royal Children's Hospital to work with 3 children with complex medical needs. It was a happy coincidence that the 3 children I worked with actually went to Belmore School.

After I completed my traineeship, I got a one year contract in Education Support at the school and wanted to continue studying disability; I also started working as a Respite Support Worker for Interchange Inner East and a Host for Interchange Outer East, so I could spend more time with the children who taught me who I wanted to be. Who would have thought working 7 days a week as well as studying would be so much fun!

I left Belmore after 2 years to further my experience in a different area of disability. I learnt all about children with Autism Spectrum Disorder while working at Mt Evelyn Special Developmental School.

In January 2013, I experienced my first Muscular Dystrophy Camp as a carer for a child I started working with at Belmore. What an experience! After going on two instances each of CampMDA , OperationMD SWAP, and OperationMD ShortBreak, I have met so many different people with Muscular Dystrophy and learnt about the challenges which they face daily; it has pushed me to be more. Now I can proudly say that I am the new Program Services Coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

I have welcomed a young girl with Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy into my home and my family life through Interchange Outer East. She stays at my house one weekend a month and we like to go shopping, swimming, bowling and watching movies together. Every weekend in spring / summer I watch my younger brothers play cricket (they make me so proud!!). Any other time I have, I spend with my amazing family and my two gorgeous dogs Tess and Cooper.

I look forward to working with the wider MD community as I strive to expand and improve the programs which MDA have to offer: CampMDA, OperationMD SWAP, OperationMD ShortBreak, Futures For Young Adults and MDA's Day Programs."
